Jaume Plensa. Materia Interior

I had been looking forward to this exhibition for a long time. I had never seen so many of Jaume Plensa’s works gathered in one place, and the idea of moving through his universe up close filled me with excitement and anticipation. The exhibition is on view at Fundación Telefónica in Madrid and brings together fifteen sculptures spanning over 30 years of Jaume Plensa’s artistic career. It can be visited from October 17, 2024, to May 4, 2025, on the third floor of the cultural space located at Calle Fuencarral 3. Admission is free.

From the very first step inside, everything felt deeply immersive. It wasn’t just an exhibition to look at — it was something to feel with the whole body. The suspended sculptures, the serene faces, the bodies made of letters floated in an almost ritual silence. As if each piece were inviting not thought, but presence.

What struck me most was how the works seemed to meditate. They didn’t demand attention, they simply inhabited the space. And in that quiet inhabiting, they gave us permission to pause, too. Not out of duty, but from a soft, almost intimate impulse.

Plensa has always worked with the invisible, with the inner world, and this exhibition makes that clear: what matters isn’t the material, but the presence. Letters from different alphabets forming human bodies, as if suggesting that we are made of words, of languages, of meanings constantly being shaped and reshaped.

I left feeling moved. Not because I had learned something new, but because something in me had been gently remembered. And that, in the midst of everyday noise, is a gift.
