If you’re looking for an art experience that feels intimate and personal, the Thielska Galleriet in Stockholm is the place to be. Tucked away in the picturesque Djurgården district, this museum offers a unique blend of art that is hard to find elsewhere. On my visit, I was particularly struck by the way the museum’s rooms are arranged to make you feel like you’re stepping into a private home rather than a typical gallery.

As I wandered through the museum, I was amazed by the large collection of Munch’s works on display. His presence in the gallery is unmistakable, and the Thielska Galleriet boasts a truly impressive selection, allowing visitors to explore more than just his most famous pieces. From his haunting portraits to his exploration of existential themes, Munch’s work is deeply emotional and thought-provoking. Here, his pieces are showcased in a way that feels almost personal—an intimate experience that allows you to connect with the artist’s vision. The museum’s inviting distribution lets you stand close to the paintings, where you can appreciate the details of Munch’s brushwork and his bold use of color.
It’s rare to find so many works by such a renowned artist in one location, and the Thielska Galleriet offers a great glimpse into Munch’s diverse range, from early sketches to later masterpieces.

While the museum is primarily dedicated to Swedish art, it also holds a small but notable selection of international works. Among these, I was happy to find a piece by Paul Gauguin, adding an unexpected layer of richness to the collection.
What truly sets the Thielska Galleriet apart from other galleries is its layout. Unlike most museums, which feature sterile, white walls and minimalistic décor, the rooms of the Thielska Galleriet are arranged as though you’re walking through someone’s private home. Housed in a beautiful mansion, the museum’s interior spaces are furnished with period furniture and rugs. This homely atmosphere gives the artwork a different context, making you feel as though you’ve stepped into the personal collection of someone who truly appreciates art and beauty.
I found myself particularly drawn to the rooms where art is displayed alongside comfortable armchairs, antique furniture, and warm lighting. It’s a far cry from the cold, clinical atmosphere of many modern galleries. Instead, there’s a sense of comfort and warmth that invites you to take your time, not just admiring the art, but also soaking in the overall ambiance.

This hidden gem in Stockholm might not be as famous as some of the city’s larger museums, but it offers a deeply enriching experience.
And if you’re planning to take a break during your visit, don’t miss out the museum’s award-winning café. Known for its delicious offerings, it has won several accolades, making it a perfect spot to reflect.a
